Flea & Tick Prevention

Keeps You and Your Pets Healthy

We at Clearwater Animal Clinic want your family to enjoy Florida's many outdoor activities. The hot, humid Florida summer creates a breeding ground for ticks and fleas. Keep you and your pet safe and healthy by using regular flea and tick prevention.

Flea and Tick-Borne Diseases

Prominent flea diseases that can be transmitted to humans include typhus and plague, and can act as intermediate hosts for tapeworms. For ticks, there are dozens of species that are deadly for pets, such as the black-legged tick, also known as the deer tick. The deer tick carries Lyme disease, Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, Powassan virusRocky Mountain spotted fever, and Tularemia. While these illnesses can be treated at a human or animal hospital, they are not one hundred percent curable, and side effects can linger for years, especially with Lyme disease. Preventing flea and tick bites on you and your pets is the first and best treatment.

Parasite Prevention Options

Our veterinary services include recommending the right flea and tick prevention options for your pet. We offer several brands for topical prevention, all of which work as repellents for ticks and fleas that find their way onto your pet's fur. Topical treatments deter these parasites from sticking around on your animal by creating a harsh environment for them. We also offer oral prevention options, which contain a small molecule safe for you and your pet, but targets and inhibits neurological proteins on parasites when they try to bite your furry animal. Both topical and oral prevention options last for one month, at which point a new dose needs to be administered. Flea and tick collars are also available. However, collars do not provide full coverage for your pet. Collars are most effective in combination with oral or topical monthly medications.
