Skin and Ear Problems

If you live in or near Clearwater FL and your pet is suffering from skin or ear problems, the veterinary professionals at Clearwater Animal Clinic are ready to assist you. Often, early treatment for skin and ear problems prevents more serious issues from occurring later on. Left untreated, a red ear or a small cut could quickly turn into an expensive and difficult to treat infection.

Common Skin Problems Among Pets

Many pets suffer from allergies. Allergies may leave your pet suffering from dry, flaky, itchy, red skin, among many other things.

Ringworm is another common problem that can result in skin and hair issues. Ringworm can cause hair to fall out, skin to become inflamed, and otherwise irritate your pet. Yeast infections can also cause inflamed skin, usually on the paws, folds, and ears.

Many pets suffer from hot spots. A hot spot refers to an area constantly licked, scratched, or bitten by an animal. Often, this results in swelling and hairless patches. Hot spots can also lead to infections. Usually, hot spots are caused by an underlying condition, and our vet can help you figure out what that is. Other common skin issues among cats, dogs, and other pets include fleas, ticks, mange, and lick granuloma (self-inflicted licking wounds).

Common Ear Problems Among Pets

Besides skin and hair issues, the ears are another potential source of discomfort for pets. Ear infections can be quite common and extremely painful for pets., and some breeds are more susceptible to ear infections than others. That said, our veterinarian can help, providing short-term relief while also helping you find long-term solutions.

Mites, ticks, and fleas can cause ear problems if they take up residence in your pet’s ear. Mites may already live in your pet’s ear, but so long as they don’t grow out of control they are not much of a problem. Ticks, however, should be removed right away and fleas need to be treated quickly as well.

Ear infections caused by bacteria, fungi (including yeast), and other irritants are perhaps the most common pet ear problems treated by our veterinarian. Even if you take excellent care of your pet, ear infections can still occur.
